Eklutna Village 10 Miles North of Anchorage Home to Athkabaskan People These model houses are actually graves called Spirit Houses. A Custom of the Native People of the area. Traditionally they believed that the Persons Spirit remained in the House for 40 days and then celebrated with a feast when the Spirit was released after 40 days. Many Athkabaskans accepted the Christian Faith when the Russian Orthodox Church arrived.Now the Houses symbolize Christs ascension into heaven after 40 days,as recorded in the New Testament.
This Russian Orthodox Church was constructed in a nearby Village of Knik in 1870 and them moved to Eklutna
Further North from Anchorage to Palmer Musk Ox Farm These Magnificent animals can reach a weight of 800 Pounds when fully Grown. That is over 360kg. They are bred in cold climates as they have a beautiful coat that keeps them warm even in temperatures a long way below zero.
