We traveled by small Plane to Mccarthy. This is a little place, which is totally isolated from the rest of the World.
Mccarthy and the town of Kennicott rely on Diesel generators for power. There is no internet here and the only road in takes 2 hours and you have to cross a footbridge as the only vehicle bridge is privately owned.
Kennicott was a copper town until the mine was closed down in the late 1930's

There are two Glaciers near Kennicott and i was fortunate enough to have good weather conditions
to walk on the Root Glacier. I took a guided, which involved wearing crampons. These are aluminium
sandals for want of a better description. They have steel spikes to grip the ice.
Believe it or not these Grey colored Mountains are actually glaciers. The top soil or silt is only a few millimeters thick and below this 200 Meters of Ice.
Me next to a Pool on the Glacier and yes the Water really is this Blue.
The Glaciers have huge crevasses called Maroons, which can go down a Hundred Meters or more
and cannot always be seen as they are sometimes covered by Snow. This is why you need a Guide.
