Today is the first time we have had to change our Itinerary due to Road Conditions. The Taylor Highway between Chicken and Boundary (Just before Canadian Border) is closed today due to Road works. This means we cannot get to Dawson City tonight. We have arrived at Chicken. Yes this is actually a place and we were only going to pass through, but will need to stop the night.
Chicken got its name because Miners in the area wanted to call it Ptarmigan after a Bird that is common in the area, but couldn't work out how to spell it so settled for Chicken instead. We have been told that there is no accommodation,as it has all been booked out by the Road crews. Miraculously we meet the owner of the local hotel who very generously offers us her Private cabin to stay in for the night. We need to light the wood fire to keep warm
This is Downtown Chicken. Only 5 shops in Chicken and a Population of 20
The cabin we stayed in last night August 28. The room was remarkably warm. We now have had the
authentic Alaskan experience staying in a log cabin in outback Alaska.
