Juneau has 200 day of rain a year and this morning it is raining and also foggy. We have our doubts about whether we will see anything on the cruise we have booked for today. Leaving Juneau dock on a small craft we
are headed South to the Tracy Arm Fjord.
What is a Fjord ?
This is a large valley carved in a U shape by a Glacier. The Fjord is therefore large valley, which is filled with water.
The fog closes in as we move south but once we enter Tracy arm the huge Mountains on each side of the
Fjord are clearly visible.
There are water falls running down the sides of the Mountains
Our first Ice Bergs
Ice bergs originate from Glaciers when bits of the Glacier break off and enter the Sea.
There are many to observe here and all different shapes and sizes. They give off different shades of blue and white. The blues are more prevalent on cloudy days,so inclement weather has worked to our advantage.
The most amazing site of the day was the Sawyer Glacier. Photos cannot adequately portray this most
amazing site. We were able to get within half a mile of it,but it looked like it was only about 200 feet
away. Every time our boat moved we got a different perspective of the Glacier. It almost seems to be alive
and breathing as it seems to change form and color.
The magnificence of a Glacier is formed when fallen snow over many years compresses to create large masses of Ice. They are prevalent on Mountain ranges and also move like a very slow flowing river.
We spent nearly and hour looking at the Magnificent Sawyer glacier depicted in the next few shots.
Wales in abundance.
Once we moved back out of the Fjord into open water we saw a number of Wales. Very difficult to get
a good Photo,as they are only out of the water for a second or two at most. I was lucky to get
these shots.
